If elected, Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike BOUCHARD said today he “won’t hesitate” to end the Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA), an incentive program that rewards businesses for staying or locating in Michigan with a tax break based on its employees’ income tax payments.
Bouchard said he voted against the MEGA program as a senator in 1995, and still is of the belief that government should not be in the business of “picking winners and losers in the marketplace.”
The Oakland County Sheriff came out with his remarks on the back of a Mackinac Center study that questioned whether the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), the entity that oversees the MEGA credits should even exist (See “Bits And Tidbits,” 8/31/09).
“I voted against MEGA back in 1995 because I didn’t feel it was the right solution,” Bouchard said. “It might have been well intentioned but wasn’t good for our state. As governor, I won’t hesitate to end it and build a new system where all businesses can compete and grow jobs.”
