Bouchard: High Michigan unemployment shows need for state government structural reform
Oakland County — Mike Bouchard, Republican candidate for governor, issued the following statement regarding the latest announcement that Michigan’s unemployment rate was 15.1 percent in October.
“The news that Michigan’s unemployment rate continues to be the highest in the nation is discouraging,” Bouchard said. “Families are struggling to hold on to their homes as others on the block lose their grip on the American Dream. As those losses continue to pile up, parents across the state, including my wife and I, are scared our children will be forced to leave Michigan to find jobs and opportunity.
“Each of these families represents a thread that makes up the fabric of our communities. When one thread is ripped out, it affects us all. It is time to make real systemic change to the way our government is run. Lansing is broken and it is time for real leadership to turn our state around.”
In September, Bouchard offered a plan that would help prevent Michigan’s seemingly annual budget crisis and encourage economic growth. The plan includes ways to make Michigan a better place to start or grow a business and create jobs.
“We have moved from a two-year to a three-year rolling budget in Oakland County. When I am presented with bad budget projections three years away, we make adjustments today.
“As governor, I will have my administration make budget projections on a three-year basis and adjust the two-year rolling budget to fit the projections. We must fix Lansing to get Michigan back to work.”
